Self Re-Flexion


No, there is nothing special about the way I spelled it, just thought it was a cool way to tie it into fitness.

So, self-reflection, what is it? What can it do for you? Self-reflection is meditation or serious thought about one's character, actions, and motives. It's easy to simply experience something, but the act of self-reflection, whether consciously or subconciously executed, is what triggers learning. It may tie an emotion, limits or boundaries, or a physiological understanding to the experience. It may occur post activity, or while an activity is on-going. The take away...without the mind, the body is nothing.

The importance is profound. It is truly the root of all wisdom. Self-refleciton helps you to put things into perspective, stay on track with goals, understand the work/life balance, and helps you learn from mistakes.

In the realm of CrossFit, or whatever your wellness journey might be, the benefit is equal. We always say that showing up is the hardest part. While that is true, it's imperative that you engage your brain during the class. If you arrive and are mentally checked out, you're failing yourself. You will undergo an experience with no stimulus for learning. It's vital to self-reflect during your journey. Whether it happens mid-WOD or at the end of the day, take the time to think about your goals and how to achieve them, your reasons for doing CrossFit, the corrections your coach asked you to make during class, and the success you've achieved through the process. Each element is a piece of the puzzle that helps you become the person you want to meet in the mirror.

Don't be afraid of what you find. You may discover that perception is not reality. It may relate to your commitment level, attendance, performance or a myriad of other things. Role with the punches and learn from yourself. "Unless you learn to face your own shadows, you will continue to see them in others, because the world outside you is only a reflection of the world inside you" (unknown). So give yourself the best opportunity to succeed. Learn from your experiences and challenge yourself. Rediscover what you want, why you want it, what it takes to get there, and how well you're following that path.
