What is the CrossFit Open you ask? The CrossFit Open is a five-week, five-workout competition held annually at CrossFit affiliates and garage gyms around the world. CrossFit HQ releases the workouts online each Thursday, and athletes have until the following Monday to submit their scores. Anyone who’s at least 14 years old can sign up, and join in this first stage of the CrossFit Games season. There are mutiple divisions for various ages and skill levels. This year’s Open kicks off February 25, 2016.
Now that you know what it is, you're probably wondering why you should do it, right? Less than 1% of participants in the Open will ever have a chance at competing competitively in CrossFit. That's not why do it. Year after year, you have the ability to track your progress and see your improvements along with hundreds of thousands of others across the globe. I could probably list a hundred reasons why the Open is a great competition for everyone to participate in, but I'll leave it with just a few key points.
First off, you just might learn something new about yourself and what you are capable of. Friendly competition brings out the best in people. Participating in the Open may be the push you need to get that first double under, muscle up, or pistol. One thing is for sure, you'll be more focused than ever. You'll find yourself with an increased effort in class and be more aware of each movement standard. Bottom line, your motivation to learn and perform will be greater than ever!
Next, there is a really good chance you'll meet some cool new people and just might be inspired by the things they can do. It may be a young gun, performing off the charts and doing things you thought were possible only by a few professionals. It may also be that 62 year old grandma, doing unassisted pullups and handstand pushups, proving that fitness knows no age or experience level (go Barb!). Maybe it's just meeting some other members you've never seen before.
Lastly, you may be an inspiration to someone else. It may be your friend, a new member, a drop in, or even someone's kids hanging out in the corner. You don't always know what good others see in you. Show up every day and be the best athlete that you're capable of being. Others are watching, guaranteed. Be an example simply by being yourself and putting your heart into every workout. That is the greatest inspiration of all.
